The Opera Studio Program

Pacific Opera Victoria and the Victoria Conservatory of Music are launching a collaborative Opera Studio project. This comprehensive training program will employ a mix of classes, workshops, and rehearsals and will culminate in fully staged performances of Mary's Wedding, an opera commissioned by Pacific Opera Victoria to commemorate the centenary of the First World War.

Training for ten singers will include coaching in stage acting, character development, movement, music and role preparation with a distinguished faculty including Ingrid Attrot, Robert Holliston, Timothy Vernon, Glynis Leyshon, Nancy Argenta, Kathleen Brett, Csinszka Rédai, Jacques Lemay and Giuseppe Pietraroia.

Opera Studio is scheduled for evening/weekend rehearsals and daytime performances for secondary and middle school audiences. The performances will be staged in school theatres on southern Vancouver Island. The Opera Studio project will also include a public performance at the Alix Goolden Performance Hall.

Additional informaion, including the school tour schedule, will be confirmed at a later date.

Mary's Wedding

An opera composed by Andrew P. MacDonald and based upon the award winning play by Stephen Massicotte, Mary's Wedding explores the experience of young Canadians whose lives were forever changed by the First World War. The music is compelling and lyrical, and the drama both romantic and urgent as the story shifts from the Canadian prairies to the front lines.

Pacific Opera Victoria commissioned the opera, which had its world première in November, 2011. Now, with the approaching 100th anniversary of WWI, we have commissioned the composer to create a shortened version of Mary's Wedding for the Opera Studio training program and Opera in Schools tour.

Mary's Wedding is a new Canadian opera about young characters. It will be performed for young audiences by young artists and will connect in a powerful way the art of opera with the experience of youth in a time of war.
