Raising Voices Workshops for Artists

Pacific Opera Victoria is offering workshops designed for students of voice and practising artists working in the fields of music, theatre, stage design and direction.

Programs are hosted and accompanied by Principal Coach Robert Holliston, with accomplished visiting artists and opera specialists.

    A tenor with a varied international career in both opera and classical theatre shares some of his experiences from the field.

    J. Patrick Raftery

    The Major Domo in Ariadne auf Naxos, a tenor, and a voice teacher with the University of Toronto Faculty of Music, Mr. Raftery will work with four Victoria singers from the POV Chorus, the University of Victoria School of Music and the Victoria Conservatory of Music: Anna Shill, Cedric Spry, Margaret Lingas and Jayne Hammond. Robert Holliston will accompany on piano.

    The Music Master in Ariadne auf Naxos, a baritone and voice teacher at the Queen's University Faculty of Music, Mr. Kelly will coach three Victoria singers.

    The Conductor and Co-Artistic Director of the Boston Early Music Festival conducts a master class with an emphasis on baroque practice with voice students Eve Richardson, Emma Hannan, Kyle Guilfoyle and Adam Dyjach, accompanied by Csinszka Rédai

    The soprano playing the Countess Almaviva in POV's production of The Marriage of Figaro coaches a masterclass with three Victoria singers.

    Thomas Goerz

    The bass baritone playing Dr Bartolo in POV's The Marriage of Figaro coaches three artists, with an emphasis on Mozart repertoire.

    Oriol Tomas

    An acting coach and opera director, Mr. Tomas offers a workshop on the synergies of voice, music and theatre. Come dressed for movement work.

    Jacques Lemay

    Choreographer Jacques Lemay offers an introduction to freeing your physical character through movement, commedia, clowning and voice. Wear all black loose fitted clothing and a crazy hat of your choice.

    The Associate Conductor of Pacific Opera Victoria and the Victoria Symphony conducts a workshop on audition technique.

    A scenic designer of theatre, film and television, Mr. Porteous shares his work and perspectives on designing for the opera stage.

Student Dress Rehearsals

  • Tickets must be ordered in advance.
  • School supervisors may book by calling 250-385-0222.
    $10 per student ticket / $15 for teachers, supervisors or chaperones)
  • Senior high school and post-secondary students may purchase tickets on their own from the Pacific Opera Victoria Box Office (500 - 1815 Blanshard Street). $10 with valid student ID.

General Auditions for Chorus and Comprimario Roles

  • Interested candidates should prepare two contrasting selections that demonstrate secure musicianship and an aptitude for performance. One selection will be chosen to audition.
