FAQ: Attending the Opera

Semele, 2009.

Here are some common questions about attending the opera. If you need more information, don`t hesitate to contact the Pacific Opera Victoria box office at 250.385.0222 or by email to

What should I wear?

Pacific Opera and the Royal Theatre do not have a specific dress code other than requiring that you be fully clothed including shoes. Some patrons prefer to take advantage of the opera experience in fancy dress; others come in business attire, while some prefer the comfort of jeans. We believe the most important thing is that you feel comfortable and enjoy the production.

As a courtesy to those who are sensitive to fragrances, we respectfully ask our patrons to use discretion when wearing scented products.

When should I arrive?

Free pre-performance opera lectures take place before each performance, beginning one hour before curtain. If you are planning to attend the lecture, we recommend arriving approximately 10 minutes prior. For those not attending the lecture it is suggested that you arrive 20 to 30 minutes before the performance. This will give you adequate time to be seated before the performance begins.

Please note that we maintain a strict 'no late seating' policy for the benefit of patrons who arrive on time and as a courtesy to the performers. Latecomers will not be seated until intermission. A plasma monitor is available in the lobby to watch the performance while you wait for the first intermission. Please check your tickets for performance time and arrive early to allow extra time for parking.

May I bring my children?

Some operas contain material that may require parental discretion. Due to the length of most productions, we do not recommend bringing small children. If you feel your child is able to handle the length and content of a production, please note that we do require a ticket for each individual entering the theatre regardless of age.

Pacific Opera's Student Dress Rehearsal Program also offers students the opportunity to attend the dress rehearsal for a modest cost. Tickets may be ordered through your child`s school approximately one month before the opening of each opera.

May I take pictures or record during a performance?

The photographing, sound recording, or videotaping of any performance, or the possession of any device for such documentation inside the theatre, without the written permission of the management, is prohibited.

How long is a typical performance?

Opera productions on average last about two and a half to three hours. The exact running time will be available approximately one to two weeks before the opening of each opera. For approximate running time, please contact the Pacific Opera box office at 250.385.0222 or .

Whom should I contact for Lost & Found?

Please contact the Royal Theatre box office by calling 250.386.6121.

Is there an elevator in the theatre?

Unfortunately there is no elevator in the Royal Theatre. If you have difficulty with stairs it is recommended that you select seats on the main level of the auditorium.

What other services does the theatre offer?

The theatre has a concession serving small snacks and beverages as well as a bar. Hearing enhancement devices can be rented at the theatre; however they no longer have opera glasses for rent.

Coat checking is available in the lobby for a $1 fee.
