What a season we have in store for you! What exhilarating worlds these are – the stormy North Sea, wide Prairie skies that go on forever, the steamy streets of Seville, and the conspiracy-filled halls of not-always-Merrie England!
We start with the tempestuous romance of The Flying Dutchman by that genius / monster of opera composers, Richard Wagner. Then, a world premiere – Mary's Wedding, based on the beautiful play that many of you already know. Set on the Prairies circa WWI, Mary's Wedding is horror and innocence side by side – an elegy for a lost generation of young Canadian soldiers and a gentle evocation of first love. February brings a wilder kind of love as we're seduced by Carmen and the erotic rhythms of Spain. And a ravishing bel canto treat – Donizetti's Maria Stuarda – will end the season with the best fight scene in opera.
This amazing season also brings more weekend performances and a move to Sunday for the matinée. We'll also be reuniting with an old friend – the McPherson Theatre – for our November world premiere. With its welcoming atmosphere and comfortable new seats, the Mac is the perfect space for the intimate world of Mary's Wedding.
We hope you'll love every moment of this season and that you'll revel in the sweep and glory of these four wondrous operatic universes!
